The Art of the Brick Exhibit

Annie,

I can’t remember: do you enjoy going to art museums? I enjoy museums, but I get bored quite easily, so lately I’ve been going to museums with specific exhibits that interest me. I went to go see a LEGO exhibit by Nathan Sawaya at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.

Nathan’s exhibit is called “The Art of the Brick”. Everything in the exhibit was created solely from LEGO pieces. He recreated a lot of famous paintings and sculptures, as well as created his own pieces. After seeing traditional mediums like watercolor and oil painting, it’s a refreshing change of pace to see someone use a different medium like Legos to make art.

Before becoming an artist, Nathan was a corporate lawyer in New York City. If I remember correctly, at first he only did Lego art on the side because he didn’t think it could earn him money. But he became so meh about work that he quit and became a full-time Lego artist. It just goes to show that you never know where you’ll end up in the future.

What have you been up to lately?
